Yes. In some areas, cemeteries also sell burial vaults, but in most cases you’ll only be able to purchase from your local funeral home.
It depends on the regulations of your local cemetery, but in most cases, some sort of outer burial protection is required.
The short answer to this question is ‘yes’—all burial vaults are sealed.
However, it is important to realize that grave liners are often mistaken for burial vaults. Given that these terms are commonly used interchangeably, there can be an assumption that they both have sealing mechanisms, when in fact, grave liners do not.
There is a significant distinction between a burial vault and a grave liner in terms of the level of protection each unit provides. A grave liner serves the purpose of supporting the weight of the earth and standard cemetery maintenance equipment to prevent a grave from over settling or collapsing.
In order to be considered a true burial vault, an outer burial container must perform all the functions of a concrete grave liner. Additionally, it must be constructed using one or more lining and sealing materials. This design increases the overall tensile strength of the finished unit and reduces the risk of intrusion by exterior elements.
