We didn’t realize we needed to purchase a burial vault. Why couldn’t we have just buried the casket? What purpose does a burial vault serve? Is it required by law? I didn’t know it could be personalized. Why are some more expensive than others?
These are just a few of the remarks and questions I have received from relatives, friends, and neighbors over the years. Sadly, several of these individuals within my social circle have laid their loved ones to rest and still had lingering questions.
There are certainly times when those of us in the death care industry receive gentle reminders that many families lack prior knowledge or experience with funeral service, burial vaults included.
Our goal is to help families who have suffered a loss or are pre-planning their own final wishes by sharing 5 questions to ask when selecting a burial vault.
1. How many different types of burial vaults do you offer?

This may seem like an obvious question, but it is included for a good reason.
Funeral homes and cemeteries generally offer six to eight burial vaults or more. However, not all of them are always on display or featured in a graphic in the selection room, so you may want to inquire about any additional choices.
Every option will appear on the Burial Vault Price List, which families are required by law to be given. Bear in mind that at least one outer burial container, often called a grave liner or concrete box, will be included on the list. These receptacles are not actual burial vaults, as their purpose is solely to bear the weight of the earth.
2. What type of protection does the vault offer?

To feel confident about purchasing a specific burial vault, you will want to gain a clear understanding of how well it will provide protection.
One of the key factors in determining the effectiveness of a burial vault is its ability to safeguard against over-settling and resist subsoil components. Your funeral director or cemetery sales professional can provide you with an overview of a product’s protective qualities.
They should be able to reference displays or show you examples of products that are built by combining multiple layers of different materials. Such vaults are widely considered to be the most effective and sustainable
3. What products have warranties?

A burial vault’s warranty may be a factor you want to take into account.
The length of a warranty will depend on the brand, style, and features selected. It is important to note that concrete boxes do not come with a warranty because they are not lined and sealed.
Trigard burial vaults come with warranties spanning 50 to 85 years, ensuring protection against defects and workmanship. They also exceed the National Concrete Burial Vault Association guidelines for strength.
4. What customization options are available?

It is always disheartening to hear someone say, “If only I had known that this was available, I would have chosen it.”
When it comes to burial vaults, there are many opportunities for personalization. Your funeral director or cemetery professional might not present every option to avoid overwhelming you, so don’t hesitate to inquire about them.
Most products are offered in a range of colors and materials. Decorative enhancements such as nameplates and emblems can be added as well.
Families who want to honor a loved one in a special way can ask about having a custom vinyl Appliqué affixed to the side or top of the vault.
5. Why does this vault cost more than this other vault?
Budget is an important consideration when selecting a burial vault, so be sure to ask about the costs associated with each option. Keep in mind that more expensive options generally offer better protection and longevity.
Fortunately, a burial vault is not something you buy every day. They are a sizable investment so when it comes to cost you will want to understand what you are paying for.
In Closing

The loss of a loved one is never easy, and making arrangements for their final resting place can be overwhelming.
Choosing a burial vault requires careful consideration of various factors. By knowing what questions to ask when selecting a burial vault, you can make a more informed choice that aligns with you and your family’s needs and preferences.
Remember that funeral directors and cemetery representatives are trained to help you discover the different materials, styles, and price ranges of vaults offered at their location. They are there to guide you through the decision-making process.

I have a URN for my wife and I to be placed in. The dimensions are 13 L X 10 W X 17 H. Do you have a Vault to accommodate? I f so what would be the cost? The urn is made of brass.
Hi Michael,
Unfortunately, we do not offer an urn vault large enough to accommodate your wife’s urn. I suggest reaching out to your local cemetery or funeral home to see if they have any suggestions for an outer burial container or vault that exceeds industry standard dimensions. Hopefully they will be able to find something that meets your needs.
Take care,
Jill
